Wakeboard, Wakesurf and Sailing will shine this weekend

The Herculina Estuary is preparing to experience a weekend of sea sports at its best with the celebration of the A Coruña Marine Festival, an event that will bring together some of the world’s biggest figures in water skiing, surfing and children’s sailing. The program combines two reference events: the wake competitions in Pista do Parrote – with 25 competitors and a truly luxurious line-up – and the Aurelio Fernández Lage Basic Sailing Cup, which will bring together 150 Optimist class boats.

The waterskiing and windsurfing tests, organized by the Marina Coruña Maritime Club, will begin first thing on Saturday, after the traditional participant briefing. The Wakesurf Men Surf Tours will start at 10am, with athletes such as Patrick Phelan, Miguel Paz, Guillermo Pérez, Alfonso Rey, Juan José Salgado and Vigo’s Andrade Pereira taking part.

After that, it will be the turn of the women’s categories, which this year offer a “Hungarian” level. Names such as world champion Nina Ryzhenkova, Ksenia Slobodsky and Viktoria Verbitska stand out, along with very promising Galician actresses such as Raquel Fernandez and Aitana Vidal.

In open skiing, the spotlight is on one of the greatest sensations in Spanish wakeboarding: Catalan Noah Tamaral, current European champion and identified as one of the great national promises. He will compete against Mallorca favorite Peter Vorobyev (Spot Wakeboard Mallorca) and Madrid-based Hugo Martin.

At 12:30 a.m., a large joint surfing and wakeboarding exhibition will be planned, which will serve as a prelude to the finals. The official closing will be at 5 p.m. In Marina Seca of the same Marina Coruña Yacht Club.

Council recognition

During the day, the Spanish Wakeboarding and Wakeboarding Federation will honor the A Coruña City Council, represented by Councilor Gonzalo Castro, for its resolute commitment to the recovery of city competitions that have deep historical roots in the estuary. It is not for nothing that La Coruña was the scene of the beginnings of Spanish water skiing in the time of the legendary world champion Victor Palomo, considered one of the most complete athletes on the international scene for his successes in water skiing, motorcycling and alpine skiing.

150 Optimist in Aurelio Fernandez Lag

On Saturday at 2:00 pm the first tests of the Aurelio Fernández Lage Cup, organized by the Real Club Náutico de La Coruña and intended for promising young sailors, will begin. The test will bring together around 150 Optimist sailors, from clubs from Miño to Eo, with a strong presence from the A Coruña and Vigo fleets, hot favorites for the podium.

On behalf of Real Club Náutico de La Coruña, Pablo Gago stands out in the men’s category and Emma Pérez Roig, one of the strongest sailors on the regional scene, among the women. José Luis Ríos Montes and Guillermo García Belado represent the Real Club Náutico de Vigo team, completing the quartet set to lead the future of Galician sailing.

The tests will continue on Sunday and will conclude at 5:00 pm, with an awards ceremony at the Náutico de La Coruña facilities, which will put the finishing touches on this second edition of the A Coruña Maritime Festival.
