Two cases of African swine fever have been detected in Catalonia for the first time in three decades

The state of Catalonia confirmed on Friday two positive cases of African swine fever in dead wild boars in Cerdanyola del Valles (Barcelona), the first case detected in Spain since November 1994, a statement said.

As a result of these two cases in wild animals, the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries and the Ministry of Interior activated an emergency plan to contain the disease, which is not transmitted to humans either through infection or through consumption of pork products.

No cases have been detected on farms, but as a result of the positive onshore results, all pork exports from the affected area outside the EU have been automatically suspended. It must be remembered that pork represents 19.3% of Catalonia’s total food exports.

The General Government included all farms in a 20 km radius around the cases, a total of five farms, and restricted life and/or slaughterhouse movements.
