Trump says the United States will permanently suspend immigration from “third world countries”

“I will permanently suspend immigration from all third world countries to allow the US system to fully recover, and I will revoke all of Biden’s millions of illegal acceptances, including those signed with ‘Sleepy’ Joe Biden’s autopen,” Trump wrote, resuming the joking nickname he used against the former Democratic president. “I will remove anyone who is not a liquid asset to the United States or unable to love our country, I will end all federal benefits and subsidies to noncitizens of our country, I will revoke the citizenship of immigrants who undermine domestic tranquility, and I will deport any alien who is a public charge, poses a security risk, or is incompatible with Western civilization.”

The message published on the president’s profile on the social networking site Truth Social was the last after a series of statements and actions taken by Trump against immigration, after confirming that the person responsible for shooting the agents was a foreigner. The Republican quickly labeled the case an “act of terrorism” and attacked the case — one of his banners in the presidential campaign.

The text posted in the early hours begins with a greeting to followers in reference to Thanksgiving, but quickly continues to mimic an anti-immigration message. Trump claims that the United States and other countries – which he calls “fools” – would have allowed division, fragmentation and death to remain “politically correct”, and has criticized immigration policy, from the high costs of welfare programs, to the relationship between immigrants and criminal activity.

Hours ago, the president announced practical measures to limit immigration, and ordered an immediate review of green cards granted to citizens of 19 nationalities. In the official announcement, the government cited security reasons and criticized Joe Biden’s administration.

Immigration authorities explained that the countries affected by the green card review are the same as those targeted by a previous action taken by Trump in June: Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, the Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen, Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela.

Two National Guard soldiers were shot two blocks from the White House on Wednesday and were taken to the hospital in serious condition. Trump confirmed yesterday that 20-year-old agent Sarah Beckstrom had died in hospital. The other agent is taken to the hospital in critical condition.

The suspect in carrying out the shooting is a 29-year-old Afghan man, who served in a paramilitary force supported by US intelligence, known as “Unit Zero.” He arrived in the United States in August 2021 through a program adopted by former President Joe Biden targeting Afghans who worked with American forces throughout the 20-year war. He received a permanent visa at the beginning of the year, already under the government of Donald Trump.

In addition to classifying the attack as an act of terrorism and saying that the shooter — whom he described as an “animal” — will pay a “heavy price,” Trump is trying to use the issue to attack the issue more broadly. He ordered the re-evaluation of all Afghans who entered the United States through the Post-2021 Reception Program.

– Obviously if you are in an illegal situation, you will automatically be deported – said Stephen Miller, presidential advisor and architect of Trump’s immigration policy, in an interview with Fox News. – But everyone who was brought here, refugees and asylum seekers, whatever their status… If you don’t love this country, if you don’t do any good for this country, we will send you out of this country.

He then announced the suspension of the analysis of all asylum applications submitted by citizens of Afghanistan, leaving more than 200,000 people in an immigration dilemma. Arafat Jamal, head of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Kabul, condemned the attack that occurred in Washington, and expressed his hope that it would not affect “other Afghans, asylum seekers and refugees” in the United States.

– I feel a little worried when I see the news that constantly emphasizes his Afghan origin – said Jamal, shortly before his meeting in Brussels.

In the early afternoon, it was the Department of Homeland Security’s turn to confirm that it had begun reviewing all asylum applications granted during Joe Biden’s government, which could affect more than 200,000 people admitted to the country between January 2021 and February 2025, when analysis of new cases stopped. A department spokeswoman said the decision was due to flaws in the admissions process during the last administration, a criticism that Trump himself echoed on several occasions before the shooting near the White House.
