Economy Minister Carlos Cuerbo has stepped down to replace Irishman Paschal Donohoe as head of the Eurogroup. It accomplished this in July, when Donohoe reconfirmed his position, from which he had resigned to go work at the World Bank. But Spain now wants to choose, at least, to maintain its position on the ECB’s governing council, which will see Luis de Guindos announce on May 31. The Ministry of Economy indicated in a statement that “Spain will continue to work to ensure a large and influential presence in the main European economic and financial institutions, ensuring that our voice contributes to building a stronger and more cohesive Europe.”
The deadline for submitting nominations for the presidency of the Eurogroup ends on Friday at five in the evening. However, there are no confirmed candidates, but they are heard by the strength of the names: the Belgian Vicent van Petegem, and the Greek Kyriakos Pirakakis. They both form part of the European PP.
