Lebanon: Hezbollah head guarantees the group will not disarm

Hezbollah leader Sheikh Naim Qassem confirmed that the Lebanese group will not disarm, even though this measure is part of a ceasefire with Israel, which the United States agreed to. The statement by the Secretary-General of the Shiite Organization came on Friday (11/28).

During a memorial service for former Hezbollah leader Haitham Ali al-Tabtabai, who was killed during an Israeli bombing on November 23, the group’s leader stated that “weapons constitute an obstacle to Israel’s project” — which maintains a strong military presence in the south of the country.

Sheikh Naeem Qassem said: “We will not accept to be a pawn in the hands of Israel.” “Hezbollah will never submit, will never surrender, and will never disarm.”

The possibility of disarming the Shiite organization, which has been active in Lebanese politics since its founding, constitutes an obstacle to the peace agreement announced by the United States in November 2024.

The administration of then-US President Joe Biden mediated negotiations between Israel, Hezbollah, and the Lebanese government, which led to an end to the 14-month war.

Amid difficulties in fully implementing the agreement, Israel continued to carry out bombing operations against Lebanese territory. According to Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, the measure targets Hezbollah positions in the south of the country.
