Trump promises to pardon the former Honduran president convicted of human trafficking

Donald Trump once again defended politician Tito Asfora, who is running for president in Honduras this year, and promised to pardon a former Honduran leader convicted by US courts of trafficking charges, if the 67-year-old politician wins the election. In a post on the social network Truth, on Friday (11/28), the President of the United States also conditioned the sending of aid to the Central American country on the victory of the right-wing candidate.

The US President said: “If Tito Asvora wins the election for president of Honduras, the United States has great confidence in him, his policies, and what he will do for the great people of Honduras, and we will fully support him. If he does not win, the United States will not waste money, because an insufficient leader can only bring disastrous results to a country, no matter who it is.”

In addition to funding Honduras, Trump made another promise if Ashfora wins the election: to grant a “full and complete” pardon to Juan Orlando Hernandez, who was convicted by US courts last year on drug trafficking charges, after being extradited from Honduras three years ago.

Hernandez, president of Honduras from 2014 to 2022, was convicted of three counts of drug and weapons trafficking. According to the US Department of Justice, the former president joined drug cartels, which transported more than 400 tons of cocaine to North American territory, when he was in charge of Honduras.

“In addition, I will grant a full and complete pardon to former President Juan Orlando Hernandez, who, according to many people I respect very much, was treated very harshly and unfairly. This cannot happen, especially now, after Tito Asvora has won the election, when Honduras will be on its way to great political and financial success,” Trump wrote.

On Thursday (11/27), the US President had already announced his support for Tito Asfora on social media. According to Trump, the right-wing candidate is “the man who defends democracy and the struggle against Maduro” in the region.

Hondurans go to the polls next Sunday (11/30), in elections that will determine the country’s next president for the next four years. Asfoura, from the National Party, is among the three main candidates in the elections.

In addition to the politician whom Trump is defending, there is Rex Moncada, from the Freedom and Reconstruction Party, which is supported by the current President of Honduras, Xiomara Castro; And Salvador Nasrallah from the Liberal Party.
