The celebration of the Libertadores final in Lima, Peru, turned into a tragedy for Palmeiras fans on Friday (28/11). An Alverde fan, 38-year-old Cao Brunelli Dezzotti, died after being involved in an accident while on a sightseeing tour of the city. The Brazilian, who traveled to watch the decision against Flamengo at the Monumental U Stadium, was on board a double-decker bus (Mirabus type) when he hit his head on the bridge.
The accident occurred at the “Circuito de Playas” in the area between Miraflores and Barranco. According to reports from other fans in attendance, the car passed under the structure at a speed that they considered inappropriate for the height of the site. Cao received first aid while still on the road and was taken by ambulance to the Maison de Santi clinic. However, he did not survive his injuries and died in the health unit.
Lima Police District Chief Enrique Felipe Monroy explained the details of the case in an interview with a local radio station. The authority even provided a copy of passenger behavior.
“According to reports, fans were jumping on the second floor, did not see that they were going to cross the bridge and crashed into the bridge,” Monroy said.
Peruvian police are now investigating the exact circumstances of what happened.
The news has shaken the concentration of Brazilian fans who are already filling the Peruvian capital for Saturday’s match (29/11). The festive atmosphere gave way to mourning and concern about safety when traveling around the city. Palmeiras and the Brazilian consular authorities are following up on the case to provide assistance to the victim’s family and speed up the legal procedures for transporting the body.
