Vasco beat Internacional and ended a run of five straight defeats in the Brazilian league. in the end, Cruz Maltino beat Colorado 5-1On Friday (28), in Sao Januario, in the 36th round, he achieved an important victory to restore his self-confidence in the final stage of the season. Coach Fernando Diniz praised the change in the team’s behavior.
“The change started in the match against Bahia and not in CT. There was a lack of inspiration and confidence, but we returned to a team that plays together. The demonstrations are legitimate, nothing was exaggerated. We were always united and worked hard all the time. Today there was a different energy between the players and in communication with the fans. I hope the team knows how to take advantage of that until the end of the season,” said Diniz.
With a great start, Vasco made it 2-0 within 10 minutes. Ryan scored the second goal five minutes after Andres Gomez opened the scoring. But in the final period of the first half, Cruz-Maltino lost steam and saw Internacional take advantage of Ricardo Matías. However, Gigante da Collina returned overwhelmingly to the final stage and expanded with Ryan, Barros and Nuno Moreira.
Deniz explains the controversy after the storm
In the final stage of the first half, heavy rain fell on Rio de Janeiro. During the match break, the São Januário Stadium was unable to withstand the storm and was flooded. This delayed the resumption of the match. After more than an hour of waiting and testing, the match resumed. However, with controversy: neither team wanted to play. Therefore, coach Fernando Diniz explained the situation.
“I didn’t want to come back because it’s bad for the show, it hurts the match and it exposes the player. They were cold and it interfered with everything, with the food and how they came back. It changed everything. The match was in bad conditions, but it was playable. Vasco and Inter’s initial idea was to reschedule the match,” explained the coach.
The match also marked the debut of the new São Januario Stadium. Between the 10th and 18th, Vasco changed the stadium and created a new stadium, which stadiums have used from the 2014 World Cup to the present day, such as the Maracanã. However, since it was the first test, the pitch had some flaws, which created insecurity and forced Vasco to change his strategy.
The coach added: “Even before the rain, we were playing differently, because the conditions were not good to play for various reasons. The pitch was uneven and the ball was bouncing a lot. So we adopted a more conservative strategy, using more long balls.”
With this defeat, Vasco rose to tenth place with 45 points, ending a series of five consecutive defeats and remaining alive in the struggle for a place in the Copa Libertadores. Cruz-Maltino will return to the field against Mirasol, next Tuesday (2), at seven in the evening (Brasilia time), in Sao Januario, in the 37th round of the Brazilian League.
