With either Palmeiras or Flamengo, Brazil will equal Argentina in winning the Copa Libertadores; See all heroes

For the first time on the continent, Argentina will no longer be the country with the most Libertadores titles. The winner of the final between Palmeiras and Flamengo, scheduled for 6pm on Saturday, will be responsible for ensuring Brazil’s 25th win in the main continental tournament, equaling the two brothers’ mark.

Among the clubs that have won the Cup the most, the preference goes to Argentina: Independiente (seven titles), Boca Juniors (six) and River Plate (four) are mainly responsible for increasing the tally (see full list below). Whoever wins between Palmeiras and Flamengo will become the first four-time Brazilian champion and the eighth team to reach this milestone.

Uruguayan Peñarol is the only ‘outsider’ in the list of greatest champions, and Saturday’s winner will join River Plate and Estudiantes in the select group of four. In all, 28 teams from seven nationalities have won the cup in the 66 Libertadores editions: Paraguay, Colombia, Chile and Ecuador are also on the list, while clubs from Bolivia, Peru and Venezuela have never claimed the cup at all.

Argentine dominance dates back to the first editions of the competition. Led by Independiente and Estudiantes, the country won nine titles in eleven years (1964 to 1974). The Brazilian beginning began precisely in Lima, six years ago, when Flamengo broke a 38-year drought and won the Libertadores title for the second time.

Since then, the trophy has remained in the country, with another title in red and black (2022), two victories for Palmeiras (2020 and 2021) and victories for Fluminense and Botafogo in the last two years. If they win the title, the team led by Filipe Luis will also ensure that Rio wins the Libertadores title for the fourth year in a row.
