Data from the General Register of Employed and Unemployed, released last Thursday (28/11), show that the number of young people up to the age of 24 rose by 122% in October. Young people aged 18-24 occupied more than 80,000 of the 85,000 job vacancies created during the month.
According to the Minister of Labor and Employment, Luiz Marinho, the jump in the number of young people hired can be explained by the desire of companies to hire cheaper workers, who are generally less qualified.
For Undersecretary of the Ministry of Statistics and Labor Studies, Paula Montanger, this is a movement observed mainly at the end of the year, when the retail and service sectors are driven by holiday shopping, such as Christmas, and commercial dates, such as Black Friday.
She explains that many business owners fire their employees and look for cheaper labor at this time of year. According to her, most of these new employees work for shorter periods of time, 30 hours or less. In the month, 110,000 people were employed in this way, and another 99,000 were dismissed, generating a balance of 10,000 employees.
Furthermore, the Minister explained that in order to cut costs, entrepreneurs tend to hire temporarily, which means that months like January and February see a very large number of layoffs.
The data showed that most of the employment of young people up to 24 years old and teenagers up to 17 years old was in the services sector, with more than 54 thousand new job openings, followed by trade, with more than 32 thousand job vacancies, and manufacturing industry, with more than 10 thousand new job vacancies.
The data also indicates that the majority of admissions occurred among women, at about 65,000 cases, compared to 19,000 cases among males. Of these, the majority of them, 52 thousand, went to the services sector.
Women also constituted the majority among temporary contracts, with 48,000 females accepted in this way, compared to 47,000 men.
