More than 200 deaths due to floods in Indonesia – DW – 11/29/2025

The death toll from massive floods in Indonesia has exceeded 200, the National Disaster Management Agency reported on Saturday (11/29/2025), while rescuers are trying to find nearly a hundred people missing.

The government authority indicated that rescue teams in the Agam region of West Sumatra recovered more bodies, bringing the death toll to 248, while more than 100 people are still missing.

In neighboring North Sumatra, 116 people died, while in the Aceh region the number of deaths reached at least 35 people, according to official data.

Today, Saturday, rescue teams are seeking to reach victims in many affected areas that were struck first by an earthquake and then by a tsunami.

The areas have become virtually isolated due to damaged roads and broken communication lines, and relief planes are delivering aid and supplies to the most affected central Tapanuli district in North Sumatra province and others in the region.

Rescue efforts were also hampered by damaged bridges and roads and a lack of heavy machinery to support the work.

Last week’s monsoon rains caused rivers to overflow in North Sumatra province. The flood destroyed a village on the mountainside, sweeping away people and submerging thousands of homes and buildings.

Authorities reported that nearly 3,000 displaced families fled to government shelters.
