At least two people were killed and dozens injured this morning in Kiev in a new massive Russian drone and missile attack against targets across Ukraine, including the power grid, leaving 600,000 homes without power. According to the Ukrainian government, Russia launched dozens of missiles and half a thousand drones across the country, once again ignoring the peace negotiations that have been taking place since last week when the United States proposed a peace plan clearly biased towards Moscow that European countries allied with Ukraine would like to review.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that Russia launched 36 missiles and about 600 drones during the early hours of the morning. “A difficult night in Ukraine, especially in Kiev. Russia launched dozens of cruise and ballistic missiles and more than 500 drones against ordinary homes, the power grid and critical infrastructure. At least two people were killed and more than two dozen others were injured, including a child,” Foreign Minister Andrzej Sepha wrote on social media. He said in his message: “While the whole world is discussing the points of peace plans, Russia continues with its two-point war plan: killing and destruction.”

According to the Ukrinform agency, the explosion, which occurred in two waves, one shortly after midnight and the other around seven in the morning, caused a power outage in several areas of the Ukrainian capital (6:00 in mainland Spain). The Kiev Independent claims the missile barrage included the hypersonic Kinzhal. Several neighborhoods were damaged, with many residential buildings damaged, especially on the upper floors. Fires broke out in at least six residential buildings in the city. The Ukrainian Energy Ministry reported in the morning that more than 600,000 users were left without electricity in five regions after the attacks, 500,000 of them in Kiev.
This new attack against Kiev comes as attempts are being made to negotiate an end to the conflict, with Steve Witkoff, the special envoy of US President Donald Trump, visiting Moscow next week, while Dran Driscoll, who is also President Trump’s envoy, is expected to arrive in Kiev, beginning this weekend. The American plan, which some believe was formulated by Moscow, includes reducing the number of the Ukrainian army, ceding Ukrainian territory (some of which is not currently controlled by the Russian army), and Ukraine’s refusal to join NATO.
After presenting the plan, the Europeans began a series of contacts at the G20 summit in South Africa to “review the plan in depth,” in the words of Spanish President Pedro Sanchez, to bring it closer to Kiev’s interests. During the week, there were new contacts, and although Donald Trump gave Kiev until Thursday to accept them, no concrete agreement was reached. Once again, Putin delayed any commitment.
Ssibha denounces that Putin, who met on Friday with Viktor Orban, his most loyal ally within the European Union, used the Hungarian prime minister as an “accomplice in his terrorism” and recalls that in 2024, “Orban’s visit to Moscow was followed by a horrific Russian attack on the Ochmatdet children’s hospital.” “Putin is simply using these politicians as actors in his blood show,” Sibiha wrote.
He adds that Putin wants to “prolong the war at any cost,” even though he cannot win it, and calls on the international community to provide more economic aid and support “to ensure that the cost (of the war) becomes unbearable for him.”
