The congress of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party could not start as planned on Saturday at 9:00 GMT due to demonstrations in the western German city of Giessen, where the party plans to re-establish its youth organisation.
As AfD sources admitted to EFE, there may be a delay due to the demonstrations and the conference has not yet started or been broadcast.
Media outlets such as the private NTV television indicated that inside the Giessen trade fair hall there were only about 300 representatives of the AfD party out of the thousands who were expected to be able to start the event, against which about thirty demonstrations were expected to protest in the hope of attracting about 50,000 people.
Jean-Pascal Homme, the 28-year-old regional MP in the eastern federal state of Brandenburg who has emerged as the new youth leader of the AfD, was not able to reach the chamber either.
After the dissolution of the “Young Alternative” party last March, the Alternative for Germany party wants to re-establish its youth organization in the city of Giessen, which is witnessing a turbulent weekend due to the rejectionist rally against the far-right party, the main opposition force in the German Parliament.
A large police force was deployed in the city, which witnessed the first demonstrations early in the morning, which included attempts to block traffic in Giessen.
