Worst rains and floods in a decade kill 600 people in Asia

Heavy rains and floods have killed nearly 600 people in South and Southeast Asia as of Saturday (29/11), international agencies reported. The region experiences the monsoon season, a period characterized by heavy rains and monsoon winds, but which has been exacerbated this year by tropical storms caused by Cyclone Sinyar.

The rains began about a week ago and hit Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Sri Lanka in particular. It is one of the worst floods in years in the region.

According to official records in each country, 300 deaths have so far been recorded in Indonesia, 162 in Thailand, and 130 in Sri Lanka, where another 170 people are still missing. In addition to the floods, a series of landslides were recorded.

In Thailand alone, as of last week, heavy rains had affected at least 1.4 million homes and 3.8 million people. Rescue forces are facing difficulties in reaching the island of Sumatra, where 111 people were killed, and there are instructions to evacuate.

According to Agence France-Presse International, the water level reached three meters in the most affected areas, which classifies the floods as one of the worst floods of the decade.
