Valve has expanded its Steam console family with three new members. It’s called the Steam Controller (a new controller with trackpads), the Steam Frame (a standalone virtual reality headset) and the Steam Machine (a built-in gaming PC).
The latter in particular has dominated conversations in the gaming community. The device’s name fits well with the company’s other hardware products, but it already seems like the community has found a better moniker: Gabe Cube.
What is a steam machine?
The Steam Machine is essentially a compact gaming PC that can also be used as a console in your living room environment. The device runs SteamOS, the same system used in Steam Deck.
This system puts gaming first and can be played entirely using a controller. Although almost all Steam games are compatible, the experience is similar to that of dedicated controllers.

Why Gabby Cube?
The gaming community has affectionately nicknamed the Steam Machine the “Gabe Cube.” It’s not entirely clear who came up with the name first, but it’s very likely that it originally came from the most liked comment in the announcement video.
The name is a perfect combination: Gabe Newell, head of Valve, as well as the GameCube, Nintendo’s famous cube-shaped console released in 2001.
