Fran Garagarza, sporting director of RCD Espanyol, suffered a heart attack this Tuesday morning and is admitted to the cardiological Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Hospital Sant Pau, in Barcelona, according to the blue and white club. Garagarza, 56, suffered an acute myocardial infarction and is “stable in serious condition”, according to Espanyol. Given the situation and circumstances, the club also informs that Jofre Carreras’ press conference scheduled after training this Wednesday morning has been cancelled.
The Mutriku (Gipuzkoa) coach is stable and awake, but will continue to be monitored to check his progress, dealing with the situation with discretion and respect as it is a private and health problem. Several First and Second Division clubs sent messages of support through social media
This health problem for Garagarza appears in one of his best moments as sporting director after designing a squad for the First Division, saving the category at the end of last season and now experiencing a great sporting moment with Espanyol in sixth place in LaLiga, in European positions. He took office on June 26, 2023 and began a new stage at the blue and white club that has given good results and strengthened his figure, also supported after the change of ownership to Alan Pace. The news shook Espanyol and its fans just a week after the club’s 125th anniversary.
