Bolsonaro’s party suspends him from his salary and duties after he was convicted of attempting a coup

The suspension of Jair Bolsonaro’s political rights, by court order, will be maintained during the period of his prison sentence and will be extended for an additional eight years after full compliance therewith. According to the newspaper “Folha”, this ruling implies that if there are no changes in the length of his sentence, the former Brazilian president will remain ineligible to hold public office until 2060, exceeding the centenary of his life according to his biography. The main news revolves around the determination of the Brazilian Liberal Party to remove Bolsonaro from his honorary duties within the party and the reward he was receiving, after the judicial confirmation that he was found guilty of trying to reverse the results of the 2022 presidential elections.

According to information provided by “Folha”, the party’s board of directors issued an official statement in which it informed of the suspension of the party’s activities and the salary that Bolsonaro received as honorary president of the party. “Unfortunately, due to the law and the suspension of the political rights of our honorary president, Jair Bolsonaro, the party activities of our leader, including his wages, will also be suspended, while the effects of the ruling remain,” the political organization said. This action came as a direct result of the ratification of a 27-year and three-month prison sentence issued by the court, which accused Bolsonaro of committing the crimes of the attempted coup and organizing a conspiracy to remain in power after his electoral defeat.

The Folha report stated that Bolsonaro received more than 39,000 reais per month from the Liberal Party, equivalent to about 6,300 euros. This income represents almost half of the total money that the former president received each month, as those from the pensions of his military and his former deputy in the House of Representatives were added to the PL payments, which amounted to more than 86,000 reais, a figure of more than 13,800 euros per month. After the ruling was confirmed, the Communist Party announced an official suspension of both concepts: party activity and receipt of salaries.

The intervention of the Brazilian judicial system also included preventive detention, which was carried out last Saturday on instructions from the Federal Police, under the pretext of flight risk. Until then, Bolsonaro remained under house arrest. With the finality of the ruling, Judge Alexandre de Moraes, a member of the Supreme Court, ruled the temporary detention of the former head of the Regional Supervisory Authority of the Federal Police, located in the Federal District, according to the newspaper “Folha”.

The criminal operation established that Bolsonaro organized and managed a network aimed at an irregular continuation of power, according to forensic analysis compiled by the media. The ruling documents a series of crimes, including a coup, abolishing the rule of law, forming an armed criminal organization, causing serious damage to state property, and deteriorating historical heritage, according to what was published by the Folha newspaper.

In addition to the prison sentence and political deprivation, the consequences of the ruling centered on the severing of the official and economic relationship between Bolsonaro and the Liberal Party. The party announced that the suspension of all activities and the reward of its former leader will remain in effect during the period in which the legal effects of the punishment are compatible. This decision was announced amid a judicial strategy aimed at strengthening the institutional guarantees of the Brazilian democratic state, with the aim of avoiding the recurrence of similar actions in the future, taking into account the seriousness of the facts and irregularities that were investigated and documented, according to Folha.
