A fan sells a photo with a replica of the Libertadores Cup for R$10

Dressed from head to toe in a flamingo costume, 65-year-old vendor Luiz Antonio da Costa attracted a crowd of people on Friday morning at the Uruguayana metro exit. A resident of Duque de Caxias, he charges R$10 to take a photo next to a replica of the Libertadores Cup. The place became an obligatory stopping point for those traveling through the centre: within a few minutes, a queue had formed and occupied the platform.

The strategy is the result of the bet. Luiz Antonio says he asked for the trophy three months ago, even before he won the title. “My dear, this is God’s choice… It’s the gift God gives us, isn’t it? To create something,” he says. He claims he paid for the replica without knowing whether the investment would pay off. And now he celebrates: “It paid off because Flamengo was the champion. This year everyone will participate in this event. Wherever Flamengo performs, we will go.”

Despite the red and black kit, the salesman says with a laugh that he supports another club.

-I am a Flamengo fan. Actually, I support Flamengo… but my team is tri-coloured. I’m trichromatic at heart. And in my pocket, I’m just a fanatic – he’s kidding.

At around 10 a.m., it was estimated that more than 50 people had already taken the photo, and about R$500 had been collected. The forecast for the rest of the day is optimistic:

– Exactly, exactly… The expectation is two thousand people – he expects.

Luiz Antonio usually works in Caxias, where he runs a sundry bank on Praca do Relogio – selling sarongs, hats, flags and beach paraphernalia. But today, the office changed its address. “The Copa Libertadores has just arrived in Rio, come and take your photo!” he announces loudly, drawing passers-by for kisses and photos with the heavy trophy he carefully holds.

Find out what the traffic schedule looks like for this Sunday

Primeiro de Marco and Avenida Presidente Antonio Carlos, in central Rio, were closed on Sunday morning for the arrival of the Flamengo soccer team, which had just won its fourth Copa Libertadores da América title. Various roads in the area will be closed until 4 p.m. The players landed at Tom Jobim Airport, Galeão, in Ilha do Governador, and headed straight to the site. Beverages in glass bottles will not be permitted within the viewing area. 21 checkpoints, using metal detectors, have been installed on access roads, in a scheme similar to what happens in mega complexes and on New Year’s Eve in Copacabana.

  • Here’s how to get there: The Christmas tree in Enseada de Botafogo will be inaugurated on Sunday

To travel between the Center, the North Zone and the South Zone, in both directions, the City Council’s recommendation is to use the routes through the Lapa Zone (Teixeira de Freitas, Avenida Mem de Sa, Avenida Repubblica do Paraguay, Rua do Riachuelo) or the Santa Bárbara, Rebucas and Marcelo Alencar tunnels. Nearby roads such as Rua Senador Dantas, Rua México, Avenida Graça Aranha, Avenida Calógeras, Avenida Rio Branco, Avenida Marechal Câmara, Avenida Franklin Roosevelt and Avenida Presidente Wilson will be open to vehicular traffic.

The recommendation of the Secretariat of Municipal Transport (SMTR) is that the public give preference to the metro to reach the fan concert. Bus routes passing through the area may be diverted. The pick-up and drop-off locations for buses terminating at the Menezes Cortes bus station will also be changed.
