In the feature film, Damon plays the protagonist, Odysseus, the legendary Greek king of Ithaca.
Known for the high level of demand for film sets, Christopher Nolan values technical precision, intense performance, and a level of detail that often leads his team to overcome creative and logistical limits. In developing his upcoming feature film, The Odyssey, director Matt Damon struggled, as he himself admitted during a recent interview.
In a conversation with Empire magazine, Damon shared his unique experience working with Nolan. The actor recalls the insecurity he felt regarding his ability to grow a beard, a step that was necessary to play his character Odysseus, the legendary Greek king of Ithaca.
“I’ve never tried to grow a beard this long. I mean there are hundreds of things that could stop me from having a stubble, starting with my kids.”Damon began. “Christopher insisted on a real beard for the film, he wanted everything real.”He added.
Nolan then explained why Damon’s request to wear a fake beard was denied:
“I’m not a big fan of fake wigs and beards. You want the physical appearance of real hair, so you can throw a hose on a guy and do all the things we want him to do.”
