The United States government reported on Sunday (11/30/2025) that Central Command forces, in cooperation with Syrian authorities, found and destroyed more than 15 Islamic State (ISIS) weapons depots in southern Syria last week. The operation took place from November 24 to 27 in the Damascus countryside governorate, according to a statement by the US Central Command (CENTCOM).
The joint forces destroyed more than 130 mortar shells, missiles, multiple assault rifles, machine guns, anti-tank mines, and materials for making explosive devices with air strikes and ground explosions. Illicit drugs were also discovered and destroyed in quantities not specified in the report.
Admiral Brad Cooper, in charge of Central Command, said: “This successful operation ensures that the progress made against ISIS continues, and that the organization is unable to repeat or export terrorist attacks to the United States or the rest of the world.” The operation comes three months after the elimination of a senior ISIS leader in northern Syria during a ground operation.
They are regrouping
The Islamic State, the militant group that once imposed a hardline Islamist regime on millions of people in Syria and Iraq, was largely crushed by the US-led coalition several years ago, but has managed to rebuild and regroup in isolated areas in both countries, despite falling short of the military strength it amassed in the middle of the last decade.
US President Donald Trump promised to do everything in his power to help Syria prosper after talks held on November 10 with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, a former al-Qaeda leader whom Washington had until recently included on the sanctions list. One of Shara’s main goals in the meeting with Trump was to push for the lifting of the toughest US sanctions against the country.
