A film produced in 1982, depicting the life of one of the most important figures of the twentieth century
There has been almost no cinematic adaptation of activist Gandhi’s life. The director did have the family’s approval, but due to a lack of budget, the film remained just a project. It was finally released in 1982 and received numerous awards, and is often considered one of the best biopics of the 1980s.
The film takes place in 1893, in South Africa, where lawyer Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi – who later became activist Gandhi – decides to analyze the living conditions of the Indian population in the British colonies, especially in India. Gandhi sought to make his voice heard through peaceful demonstrations, such as hunger strikes. When the film was released in 1982 GandhiBy Richard Attenborough (John Hammond in Jurassic Park), and it received critical acclaim.
The film received 11 nominations and 8 awards at the 1983 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. Actor Ben Kingsley (Shutter Island, Iron Man 3) played Gandhi, a performance that would earn him the Academy Award for Best Actor. The rest of the cast also includes many famous actors, such as Martin Sheen (Apocalypse now) as Vince Walker and John Mills (War and peace) as Lord Chelmsford.
