Corinthians had a mix of emotions when they managed to draw 2-2 with Botafogo, in the 36th round of the Brazilian League, on Sunday (30/11). The result showed the reactionary strength of the Sao Paulo team at the New Quimica Arena. After all, they struggled to come back against the opposition, but in the 37th minute of the second half, defender Gustavo Henrique equalized. Although defeat was avoided, the number 13 indicates dissatisfaction with the result of the match.
“For me, it’s a missed opportunity. We had a great first half. We said Botafogo is a great team, with high quality. They made some changes that made it difficult for us to score. It took us some time in the second half to understand that, we reduced that, but they improved and enjoyed the game. Playing at home, we always have to win. We took the lead, we took the turn, but we didn’t give up and we got the draw,” said the defender.
After Vitinho’s solo play on the right side of the attack, Gustavo Henrique showed the opportunism of the centre-forward. This is because he was in the penalty area, received the pass and finished the match with just one touch, ensuring the equalizer for Corinthians. The result even prevented Timao from suffering a shock defeat and rising to ninth place, but it did not allow the team to equal the score of Sao Paulo, which is in eighth place.
Getting a place in the Libertadores is Corinthians’ ambition
At the same time, they remain close contenders for a place in the pre-Libertadores stage. It is important to note that this achievement will represent a guarantee, as the team still has a chance to qualify directly for the Libertadores group stage if it wins the Brazilian Cup.
In fact, Corenjo’s penultimate match in the Brazilian championship will be against Fortaleza, who still dreams of escaping relegation. The two teams will face off in the 37th round of the tournament, at 7 pm, in Castelao, next Wednesday (03/12).
