Trump sees “good prospects” for an agreement between Russia and Ukraine – DW – 11/30/2025

US President Donald Trump confirmed, on Sunday (11/30/2025), that there are “good prospects” for reaching an agreement between Russia and Ukraine after talks between American and Ukrainian delegates in Florida, but he warned that the corruption scandal rocking Kiev “does not help.” At the same time, his Ukrainian counterpart highlighted the constructive tone of the meeting.

“Ukraine has some complicated little problems,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One, referring to the corruption investigation that forced Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to fire his chief of staff and chief negotiator, Andriy Yermak, after a review of his office and management by anti-corruption officials.

“But I think there is a good chance of reaching an agreement,” added the US president, who recently presented a peace plan that some European governments consider too favorable to Moscow, which includes, among other points, territorial concessions, limits on the size of Ukrainian forces, and the impossibility of Kiev joining NATO.

Zelensky thanks Trump

For his part, President Zelensky highlighted the constructive tone of the dialogue after the meeting held by a team from his country, led by Ukrainian Security Council Secretary Rustam Omerov, with US representatives in Florida, led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and stressed that Ukrainian interests were taken into account in the talks.

“It is important that there is a constructive tone in the conversation and that all issues are discussed openly and with the aim of ensuring Ukraine’s sovereignty and national interests,” Zelensky wrote on his Telegram account. Zelensky added: “I thank the United States, President Trump’s team, and the President himself for devoting extensive time to identifying the necessary steps to end the war. We will continue to work.”

After the meeting, Rubio declared that the work session was “productive.” “There is still a lot of work to be done, but today was a very productive and useful meeting and I believe new progress has been made,” he said.
