Diab (the Department of Joint Parliamentary Advice between Unions) will hold seminars starting next year to train union leaders on dealing with the “Business Office” held in Congress, according to the new head of the department, Rita Serrano.
“Today we have one of the most physiological and clientelistic congresses in the history of democracy in Brazil,” says Rita. “This congress turned the agendas of society, workers and development onto the agenda.”
She adds about the “Diab Strategic Dialogues: Trade Unionism, Democracy, Parliament, and Movement” initiative, “Therefore, it is necessary to raise the level of awareness in society and provide tools for trade union leaders to carry out this discussion.”
Diab is a non-profit entity run by trade unions and national labor federations for technical and political advice. Rita, former president of Caixa, was elected to a three-year term. She will assume her duties on Wednesday (3).
Rita says she also wants to intensify the discussion with trade unions about reducing working hours and organizing requests to increase pressure on Congress.
He adds: “These workers are self-employed, unstable, have union representation that is still in its infancy, and work long hours. So the goal is to work on organizing them to obtain rights, such as retirement and better working conditions.”
