PB: Lioness who killed 19-year-old girl at zoo will not be euthanized

The lioness Leona, who killed a cub after invading the cat enclosure at the Arruda Camara Zoo, known as Pika, will not be sacrificed in João Pessoa (PB), this Sunday (30/11). According to the local administration, the animal did not show aggressive behavior and was never considered for euthanasia. In other words, it will not be sacrificed.

According to Parque da Pica, Leona suffered a “high level of stress” during the incident that led to the boy’s death. The park administration explained, in a statement, that the lioness is in good condition and remains under constant surveillance and supervision.

The park remains closed to visitors

The Regional Veterinary Medical Council of Paraíba (CRMV-PB) announced that it would form a technical committee to evaluate Parque da Bica, which was closed after the attack. There are no expectations to reopen it to visitors.

The space added in a second note posted on Instagram: “Bika will remain closed to visitors until the end of investigations and official procedures, while appreciating transparency and commitment to the safety of our visitors, employees, and animals.”

According to the administration of Parque da Bica and the city of João Pessoa, the young man broke into the lioness’ enclosure at the zoo “deliberately.” The municipal authorities highlighted that he “quickly and suddenly” climbed a six-meter-high wall and security bars, reached one of the trees in the space and entered the cage.

Video clips circulated on social media showed the actions of the child who was attacked by the animal, which led to his death from his wounds.

The deceased young man has been identified as Gerson de Melo Machado, alias Vaquerinho, aged 19 years. He broke into the cat pen and died as a result of his injuries caused by one of the animals. Vaquerinho was suffering from mental disorders. Guardianship counselor Veronica Oliveira, who followed his case, stated that the young man did not receive the treatment he should have.

She said in a video clip: “Although the council requested reports because the mental disorder was apparent, the state said he only had a behavioral problem. Does the person who enters the lion’s cage, who throws rocks at the police car, have a behavioral problem? No, this is not just a behavioral problem. Gerson needed treatment, which was not provided.”

Veronica stated that Vaquerinho was under institutional care in the city. He was the son of a mother and grandfather who suffered from schizophrenia, she said.

“But the psychiatrists insisted on saying he was just a boy who didn’t fit in because he had behavioral problems,” the woman said. “The Mangabira Guardianship Council will not remain silent. We have fought hard to try to guarantee Gerson’s rights. My feeling today is one of revolution.”
