The former revenue chief who launched jewelry for Bolsonaro has been fired

Former President of Federal Revenue Julio César Vieira Gómez received the penalty of dismissal, on Monday (1/12), by the Federal Comptroller General (CGU). The dismissal was published in the Official Gazette of the Union (DOU), following the conclusion of the Administrative Disciplinary Process (PAD). The CGU had already opened similar proceedings against Gomez for his role as Revenue Minister in 2022, and the Federal Police (PF) also intercepted his messages in 2024.

According to investigations, Gomez attempted to release Saudi jewelry confiscated by the Tax Authority at the end of the Bolsonaro government’s term.

In 2024, Gomez was charged with embezzlement, money laundering and the functional crime of administrative pleading before the Tax Administration.

In the order, the final report of the Disciplinary Process Committee applies “the penalty of dismissal to Mr. Julio César Vieira Gómez”, due to the violation practice provided for in “Article 117, Title IX and non-compliance with the job duties provided for in Article 116, Sections II and III of Law No. 8112 of 1990”.

The Solidarity Administration indicated that “the convict holding a federal public position is prohibited for a period of 5 (five) years in accordance with Article 137 of Law No. 8112 of 1990.”

The former revenue chief resigned from his career as a tax auditor in 2023.

Messages intercepted by National Front forces between Gomez and Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid were used in an investigation against Gomez, who tried to release Saudi jewelry seized by revenues at the end of Bolsonaro’s government.

The PF report indicted former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and 11 other people in the case in which the illegal sale of jewelry obtained abroad during the presidential term was investigated. The judicial police concluded that there was a crime of embezzlement, formation of a criminal gang, money laundering, and criminal promotion.

Communications between Gomez and Syed showed the then Chief of Revenue’s intention to release the Saudi jewelry seized by Revenue at Guarulhos Airport. “Did the president inform you that we would recover the assets?” Gomez asked Cid, then an aide to Bolsonaro, in December 2022. Cid replied: “I warned you!”

In February 2023, already during Lula’s government and before the takeover became public, Gomez sought out Cid again. “You’ll need a power of attorney from Pinto Albuquerque,” he asked. “Is that applicable?” “I think so,” Sid replied.

Albuquerque, Bolsonaro’s minister of mines and energy, has also been indicted by the National Front in the Saudi jewelry investigation. The former minister received one of the illegally stolen jewels in Bolsonaro’s name.
