Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum denied on Monday that the resignation of Attorney General Alejandro Gertz Manero was due to a confrontation or break in relations between the two. The President summed up her morning press conference by saying: “I believe that one period has ended and another has begun. We agreed on this together.” In addition, he took the opportunity to downplay criticism of the lawyer’s management at the head of the Attorney General’s Office during his seven years of leadership, and insisted that his work and career be recognized before he began his new phase at the head of the embassy.
Doubts have surrounded the reasons for Gertz’s imminent resignation, especially since when he assumed the presidency, the relationship between his chosen prosecutor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and Sheinbaum was unknown. The president settled the speculation from the National Palace, denying that there was a “serious reason” behind the change in FGR leadership when Geertz still had at least two years left in office. “The important thing is recognition for his work. One cycle ends, a new one opens and he will represent Mexico at an embassy,” Sheinbaum concluded when a journalist mentioned Geertz’s setbacks, including being charged with murder for failing to take care of his niece and sister-in-law as a prosecutor.
