The Romanian Ministry of Defense announced in a statement, Tuesday, November 11, that “on the night of November 10-11, 2025, the Russian Federation launched new air strikes on Ukrainian ports on the Danube River.”
He added, “Several explosions were reported on the Ukrainian bank of the Danube River in the Izmail Port area.”
Romanian radars detected groups of drones near the NATO member state’s airspace shortly after midnight, prompting the ministry to issue an alert to residents of the southeastern region.
According to the defence, weather conditions prevented the deployment of combat aircraft, but military teams were able to recover possible fragments of a drone near the Romanian border with Ukraine.
The ministry said that it “was informed of the impact of an air plane in the Grindo area, about five kilometers south of the border. Military teams went to the scene and reported the presence of possible fragments of a drone.”
Authorities stated that samples collected from the sites where drone fragments were found were similar to those used by the Russian military.
“It’s happened before”
Later, Romanian President Nicosor Dan told reporters that the incident was “accidental,” adding: “It has happened before.”
Romania and Poland are deploying a new weapons system to defend against Russian drones after a series of incursions into NATO airspace in recent months, exposing the alliance’s vulnerabilities and putting Europe on alert.
In October, the European Union condemned the “Russian escalation” after a series of violations of European airspace attributed to Russian aircraft. In addition to Romania and Poland – which border Ukraine – Estonia, Denmark and Germany have accused the Kremlin of sending drones into their airspace.
A NATO brigade began rapid deployment exercises in Romania on October 20, which will end on Thursday.
Last month, the United States announced a reduction in its military presence on Europe’s eastern front, including the withdrawal of nearly 700 of the 1,700 American troops deployed in Romania.
In September, Romania summoned the Russian ambassador after a drone was infiltrated. In February, Bucharest passed a law allowing the country to shoot down drones that violate its airspace.
