The friend got into an argument with a man – who was with Tainara – and a fight broke out. Douglas said he tried to break up the fight but was hit in the face with a bottle. He got into the car with Cowan and left the scene, but he saw Tainara and the man coming out of the bar.
Douglas stated in his testimony that he maneuvered to stop the car next to the couple with the aim of scaring them, but he ended up colliding with Tainara, who was under the car. He said he believed the car had suffered some mechanical failure, which is why it accelerated.
Douglas also stated that he closed the windows and turned up the volume, so he did not notice the gestures of other drivers warning not to tow Taynara. The man said he did not provide assistance and fled the scene for fear of being attacked by witnesses.

- Police Chief Augusto Besigo also stated that Douglas did not stop the car and that Taenara only escaped because the body became separated.
Tayanara’s sister stated that Douglas had been pursuing her for some time and they never had a serious relationship. The victim remains hospitalized in the intensive care unit (ICU), but there is no risk of death.
