União Brasil nominates Robinho Nunes as president of the Sao Paulo Chamber and raises unease with the city’s mayor

According to the council members who are part of the right-wing and center-right acronyms heard by Globo, Robinho’s candidacy is far from unanimous, and the mayor’s base should work to re-elect the current president, Ricardo Teixeira (Uniao), to the position.

There is also the possibility of parties such as PL or MDB launching candidates as alternatives. PL said in a statement that it would wait for “determination from the national directory to take a position.”

The meeting that determined Robinho’s name was not attended by Ricardo Teixeira, who refused to attend, nor did it include members of the party’s municipal leadership, headed by former Chancellor Milton Light.

Robinho stated that he would now “dialogue with all seats in the council” and that the elections had already passed, waving to the mayor.

-I respect the mayor and the work he was doing. The elections ended more than a year ago, and what happened was limited to the electoral period. Since then, I have had a good conversation with the CEO and voted for the good projects he sent to the room – he told GLOBO.

The mayor described the decision as a “betrayal on the part of the Brazilian Federation.”

In a note, Uniao reported that “the selection of the seat follows the party’s decision to comply with the agreement formalized in December 2024, which provides for a rotation of parliamentarians from the party in the presidency” and that “the seat met independently.”

Last year, there was an agreement between the parties that were part of Ricardo Nunes’ coalition, so that the Brazilian Union would take over the presidency of the chamber, with the Liberal Party taking the position of deputy mayor, Colonel Melo Araujo, and the mayor being subordinate to the Brazilian Development Bank.

The electoral tribunal had declared Robinho ineligible for publishing a false report linking then-candidate Guilherme Boles (PSOL) to drug use, but the regional electoral tribunal (TRE-SP) overturned the decision last week.

The Brazilian Confederation’s attempt to nominate Robinho repeats a conflict that already arose a year ago, as the party tried to launch him as president of the chamber for this year, but was unable to do so precisely due to a lack of support from the executive branch. Milton Leite also tried to elevate Councilman Silvao Leite to the position, but since he is in his first year in office, there was no support. Now Ricardo Nunes’ base must negotiate again in order to reach an agreed upon name, which would ideally be Teixeira.
