The Minister of the Secretariat of Social Communications (Secom), Sidonio Palmeira, denied on Tuesday that Palacio do Planalto is trying to postpone the Federal Senate’s consideration of the nomination of the Attorney General of the Federation, Jorge Messias, for a seat on the Federal Supreme Court (STF).
Sidonio spoke on the topic when asked about the memorandum signed today by the President of the Senate, Davi Alcolombre (Uniao-AP), in which the senator says that the decision of the executive branch to delay sending the message formalizing the election of Christ is “dangerous and unprecedented.” The appointment of the current AGU dissatisfied part of the Senate, which supported the selection of Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG) for the vacancy that opened with the retirement of Luis Roberto Barroso.
“The government is aware that Planalto has the right to nominate a name for the STF to the Senate. The Senate also has the right to approve it or not, and this is normal in the democratic process. There is no intention on the part of the executive to circumvent anything,” Sidonio replied.
The exchange of harsh criticism began after the government leadership decided to withdraw from sending the letter addressing Messias’ nomination for membership in the STF, as a means of postponing the analysis of the selection by senators, a move that the government had pre-empted. value.
The reason for this is that Planalto evaluated Alclumbri’s decision to schedule Messias’ hearing next Wednesday (10), in the Constitution and Justice Committee of the House of Representatives (CCJ), as a quick decision. Behind the scenes, government interlocutors believed that the tight deadline was Alcolombre’s way of preventing the AGU from building a majority in favor of his candidacy.
Accordingly, Planalto’s internal assessment was that the PT administration did not need to make this appointment official within a pre-determined period, even though President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s selection had already been published in the Official Journal of the Union. With this, the executive hoped to preserve Messias, so that the crisis between the government and parliament could be “eased”.
But instead of easing the crisis, the situation worsened. This is because the Colombian will be upset by Planalto’s strategy. In the face of this complex situation, the President of the Senate decided this afternoon to cancel the legislative calendar that he announced last week, which stipulated holding the Christ session next week.
“The Senate was surprised by the failure to send a written communication on the nomination, which had already been published in the Official Journal of the Federation and widely publicized. This omission, which is the exclusive responsibility of the executive, is serious and unprecedented. It is an interference in the schedule of hearings, which is the prerogative of the legislature,” the Colombri declared.
