A young couple, aged 24 and 26, were the target of homophobia by a security guard at the São Paulo municipal market, known as the Mercadao, located in the city’s historic centre. The case that happened last Sunday (11/30) was recorded and posted by Kawan Maya.
After the lovers embraced, the security guard asked them to leave the establishment because it was a “family place.” One of the victims said: “I hug him and I will continue to hug him wherever I want. It’s common here.”
It can be seen in the photos that the security guard wondered if the men couldn’t “do it outside.” Watch the video:
Homophobia in Mercadão de SP
The couple contacted the civil police to report their experience of homophobia. The case was registered as an insult in the 1st Police District (Sé).
In a statement, the franchisee responsible for managing the facility classified the employee’s situation as an “isolated and unacceptable fact.” “This does not reflect Mercadao’s principles or commitment to respect, inclusion and diversity,” the memo stressed.

He added: “Once the situation was identified, appropriate actions were taken, including notifying the external company responsible for the access controller involved in this approach and requesting his immediate dismissal. In light of this fact, we are working to strengthen our diversity and inclusion policies with all of our direct employees and service providers.”
The official also noted that the municipal market is a member of the Brazilian LGBT Chamber of Commerce and Tourism. “The administration continues to work with full transparency to ensure that the Mercado remains a safe, democratic and open place,” he concluded.
After the repercussions of the video on social media, the professional directly involved in the homosexuality ring was fired by the security company.
