The lawmaker, who has already stated that he will work to ensure that Brazilian parliamentarians “do not find a dialogue” on trade tariffs in Washington, D.C., in the midst of the bilateral crisis, once again defended the legality of trade sanctions.

He said: “Sanctions are never an end in themselves; they are legitimate tools to correct serious violations when other avenues are closed.”

Lula called Trump earlier Tuesday, and according to Palacio do Planalto, the presidents spoke for about 40 minutes, talking about tariffs and discussing measures, such as cooperation in fighting organized crime.

According to the statement, the Labor Party member thanked the Republican for canceling the additional 40% tariff on various Brazilian products, such as beef and coffee. Eduardo Bolsonaro added: “We trust President Trump’s leadership to negotiate with Brazil an understanding that protects U.S. strategic interests in the hemisphere and, at the same time, recognizes the urgent need to restore civil liberties and the rule of law for the Brazilian people.”

According to the parliamentarian, any progress in bilateral relations requires “honestly confronting the current institutional crisis in Brazil and reaffirming freedom as a basic foundation among democratic countries.”
