“Gastronomy Oscar” selects 6 Brazilian restaurants among the best in Latin America

One of the most prestigious gastronomic awards in the world, The 50 best restaurants in Latin America (A branch of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants), which annually selects the best restaurants in Latin America, revealed on Tuesday night (2) its new ranking for 2025. After two years in Rio de Janeiro, the ceremony of the thirteenth edition of the award was held in Antigua, Guatemala, bringing together chefs, sommeliers, restaurateurs and opinion makers. Brazil confirmed its strength in the continent’s food scene, placing six titles in the top 50. First place went to Colombia, with the restaurant El Chato, from Bogotá.

  • Best in Latin America: Thomas Trosgros will have dinner in Osel with Fabricio Lemos and Lisian Arocca, from Grupo OriGem
  • Rio news: From busa-filled bars to a Japanese music bar and the reopening of Padaria Ipanema, newly opened places to visit in Rio

The national highlight of the night was Togo, from São Paulo, for Ivan Ralston, who came in eighth place, up from 16th last year, and leads the list of national award winners. Also from São Paulo, Tassia Magalhães’ Nelita – who was voted the best female chef on the continent at this edition – rose 14 places, reaching 12th place, followed by Rio’s Lassai, from Chef Rafa Costa e Silva, in 13th place. Evvy, from São Paulo, by Luiz Felipe Sousa, also shined again in 20th place, with a special award for pastry chef Bianca Mirabelli. Also from São Paulo, A Casa do Porco, by Jefferson Rueda, was again among the best-rated books, coming in at 25th place. In Rio, Oteque, run by chef Alberto Landgraf, “a Brazilian temple to seafood”, fell a few places, but maintained its position in 38th place (it was 21st in the last edition). A strong year for Brazilian gastronomy.

In addition to the restaurant awards, Tassia Magalhaes, from Nelita, was named Best Chef in Latin America, while Bianca Mirabelli, from Evvy, was named Best Pastry Chef in the region. Restaurants are selected through an independent vote by 300 jurors, including journalists, gourmets and experts.

Even before the top 50 restaurants were announced, Brazil had already shown its strength in the rankings preview: Ten restaurants in the country appeared in the expanded list, ranging from 51st to 100th place. There are six houses in São Paulo, two in Salvador, one in Rio and one in Curitiba. Origim, led by Chefs Fabricio Lemos and Lissian Aroca, leads the Brazilian group in 52nd place, after rising 16 places. Kotori, Mitzi and Mane, all from Sao Paulo and former members of the top 50, fell to 55th, 56th and 73rd respectively.

The national team in the expanded list also includes DOM (74th) and Notiê (93rd), both from São Paulo; Manu from Curitiba (80); and Salvador Manga (99). Among the new additions to this edition are two newcomers: Rio Osel, by Thomas Troisgros – elected Chef of the Year by the Rio Culinary Awards in 2025 – which comes in 65th place, and São Paulo Ceiba, in 73rd place.
