Allies of Christ celebrate the abolition of the Sabbath

Behind the scenes, Jorge Messias’ allies celebrated the decision of Senate President Davi Alcolombre (Uniao-AP) to cancel the hearing of Lula’s nominee for STF membership.

The assessment was that despite the aggressive tone used by Alcolombre when announcing the repeal, the government and Messias had gained time to obtain the votes of the senators.

The decision of the Senate President was also welcomed by STF ministers who helped Lula’s candidate gain support in the Senate.

One of Christ’s allies told the newspaper with reservations: “The situation is improving. Maybe he (Christ) got an extra week.”

Although Christ’s allies are celebrating, Alcolombre’s interlocutors say there is no new date for the hearing. They say the trend is to hold the session until 2026.

Why did Colombre cancel the hearing?

When announcing the cancellation of the session, the Senate President said that he took this action because Lula’s government had not sent the official message appointing Messias.

In a memorandum read to senators, Alcolombre stated that he had set December 3rd as the date for reading the opinion of the nomination rapporteur, and December 10th for hearing and voting on the nomination.

The President of the Senate said in the memorandum, “Determining this calendar follows the pattern adopted in previous nominations, and was intended to ensure compliance with this constitutional assignment to the Senate in the fiscal year 2025, and avoid postponement to next year. But after setting the dates by the legislative authority, the Senate was surprised by the absence of sending the written message regarding the nomination, which had previously been published in the Official Gazette of the Federation and widely announced.”

Alclombre also accused Lula’s government of “omission” in not sending the official message nominating Messias before the hearing. For the senator, this omission is “dangerous and unprecedented.”

“This omission, the exclusive responsibility of the executive branch, is serious and unprecedented. It is an interference in the scheduling of hearings, which is the prerogative of the legislature. To avoid the possible allegation of a procedural defect in the nomination process – given the possibility of holding the hearing without officially receiving the message – this Presidency and the Committee on the Constitution and Justice (CCJ) determine to cancel the submitted calendar,” the President of the Senate said, without announcing a new date.
