The official hot season hasn’t arrived yet, but warmer temperatures have been making an appearance more frequently this year. Proper use of sunscreen is essential every day, not just when the sun is outside. In any month of the year, sunscreen is a great ally to avoid various skin problems, including premature aging, dryness, pre-cancerous lesions and even skin cancer.

Ultraviolet A and B rays, penetrating the skin, cause damage and have a cumulative effect. Therefore, care cannot be left aside to avoid the appearance of blemishes and wrinkles, in addition to possible skin diseases.
According to data from the Brazilian Society of Dermatology (SBD) in São Paulo, the recommended sun protection factor (SPF) is at least 30, but the general recommendation does not eliminate the need for individual consultation with a dermatologist. In general, the recommendation is “one teaspoon of sunscreen on the face and neck.”
Daily use of sunscreen is recommended in all seasons, as exposure not only occurs with the skin being directly exposed to the sun, but also protects it from UVA and UVB rays.
— UVA rays have a constant intensity throughout the year, and reach the skin in much the same way during winter or summer. Penetrating deep into the skin, it is mainly responsible for the aging factor and also affects the appearance of cancer. UV rays penetrate the skin superficially and cause sunburn – explains dermatologist Daniel Dziapas, full member of SBD, stressing that “UV rays increase during the summer, especially between 10 am and 4 pm.”
Even on cloudy days, sunscreen should not be forgotten. According to the Brazilian Society of Dermatology, it should be applied at least 30 minutes before sun exposure.
It is not enough to apply it at the beginning of the day. It is recommended to reapply every three hours. On days with more sweating, prolonged sun exposure or after leaving the water, it is recommended to reduce the interval to every two hours.
To ensure product effectiveness, application must be uniform. Dermatologist Jocel Petin, of Clínica FEM, in São Paulo, and an SBD member, warns that a specific product is needed for the face:
– Facial skin is generally more oily than body skin. Therefore, to avoid the appearance of blackheads and whiteheads, the ideal solution is to choose an oil-free sunscreen or gel – warns the dermatologist.
