What Lula and Trump talked about during the call

During a private phone call between Lula and Donald Trump held on Tuesday (2/12), the Brazilian president requested the suspension of the sanctions applied by the United States on the authorities in the country. Lula used the conversation to suggest direct cooperation between Brazil and the United States in the fight against organized crime.

According to interlocutors, the Brazilian president requested the suspension of sanctions imposed by the United States on the authorities in the country – including the Magnitsky Act measures against Minister Alexandre de Moraes – and a review of visa restrictions affecting other members of the government, such as the Minister of Health, Alexandre Padilha.

Lula indicated to his aides that Trump was “receptive” and willing to reassess the sanctions, although he did not offer immediate guarantees. However, the reading in Itamaraty indicates that progress has been made. Palacio do Planalto expects to achieve tangible results by January, both with the reduction of visa and tariff sanctions and with the easing of immigration restrictions.

The direct cooperation between Brazil and the United States in the fight against organized crime was highlighted, as well as the need to exchange information and take coordinated action against transnational networks suspected of operating in the United States of America. The Brazilian president also served as an interlocutor with Venezuela, signaling his willingness to take the lead in mediation with the White House.
