The warning issued by US President Donald Trump about the possibility of carrying out ground attacks in Colombia, and Gustavo Petro’s response to his counterpart, sparked reactions among many politicians in the country.
Daniel Palacios, former interior minister and presidential candidate, questioned the Petro government’s anti-drug policy, noting that “Colombia has gone from a producing country to also being a consuming country.”

“It will be a sleeping jaguar, blowing up its prey or letting it escape. Colombia is flooded with drugs, We have transformed from a producing country to a consuming country as well. The only happy thing is rattles and stickersDaniel Palacios said.

Historic Charter Senator Esmeralda Hernandez asked President Trump, “What is your real intention to threaten the country? If Trump is looking for submissives to kneel before him, he is wrong because this government does not humiliate itself like previous governments.”
“What is happening with the United States is very dangerous. Donald Trump has publicly announced that Colombia may be attacked as part of the war against drug trafficking. Make no mistake, Mr. Donald Trump. You cannot assert that you will violate and threaten the sovereignty of a region whose president has encouraged effective action against drug trafficking.– said Esmeralda Hernandez.
He added: “In Colombia, a coca laboratory is destroyed every forty minutes; nine laboratories daily, with a total of more than eighteen thousand and four hundred destructions during the current government. This administration has seized the largest amount of tons of cocaine. In 2025 alone, the nine hundred tons seized were exceeded, and in total, this period reaches more than three thousand tons, that is, a rate of more than sixty-one percent compared to previous periods.”
Presidential candidate Santiago Botero emphasized that the war on drugs or drug trafficking “is not won by burning trucks or boats.”
He stressed that the only way out is the legalization agreed upon with the United States, warning that if this is not achieved, “The beneficiaries are drug traffickers and politicians allied with them.”
“It is necessary to apply the same approach that was used with alcohol, cigarettes and marijuana: it must be legalized. However, this requires dialogue with the US government, because until progress is made in this sense, the only beneficiaries are the drug traffickers and the politicians who have relationships with them. As the saying goes, if the government does not confront the criminals, it is because the criminals are in the government,” Botero stressed.
Historic Charter House Representative David Resero called Donald Trump’s message “dangerous and insulting.”
Likewise, he asked the Congress of the Republic to declare, Because he classified the North American country’s statements as intimidating Colombia and its sovereignty.
Presidential candidate Camilo Romero also questioned President Donald Trump’s statement and demanded respect for Colombia.
Camilo Romero said: “Colombia respects itself. Come on! Even if there are some traitors in the opposition who applaud everything, here is a free and sovereign people that does not recognize the delusions of petty kings.”
