On Tuesday (2/12), the Civil Police arrested a man in charge of a company that rents dogs to work as “security guards” at properties in Sorocaba, within the city of São Paulo.
According to the investigation conducted by the Sorocaba Police Station, agents were called to verify the address of a social project in the Parque das Pineras neighborhood. At the scene, they found three dogs in critical condition, showing signs of malnutrition and untreated diseases, and kept in dirty kennels, without water, food, or “any minimum hygiene conditions.”
Additionally, officers found a dead dog at the scene. The animal was disposed of irregularly, on the banks of a river, inside a black plastic bag. The dog’s death was not reported to any competent authority.
What did the prisoner say?
- The official stated that he visited the dogs twice a day.
- He said he kept other animals spread across different properties in Sorocaba.
- When contacted, he admitted that he did not have a suitable facility to house dogs, in addition to not providing veterinary care and not knowing whether the dogs were sterilized, vaccinated, or carrying diseases.
- The man confirmed that the company rented security dogs for a monthly sum.
He was caught red-handed for the crime of ill-treatment. The police requested the man’s pretrial detention, taking into account “the seriousness of the facts, the habitual practice, and the risk of repeating the crime, given that the economic activity he practices depends directly on the inappropriate exploitation of animals.”
The police also called for the company to be completely banned, with immediate cessation, because it is an illegal practice and contravenes animal protection legislation.

The owners of the property, which was rented to the security company, said they had not had any direct contact with the dogs and were not aware of the animals’ health condition.
The Sorocaba City Council issued a notice of administrative violation, as well as a veterinary report confirming the mistreatment.
The animals were rescued and are under veterinary care, in safe places away from dangerous situations.
