An unusual scene that caught attention on social media. Player Yuri de Carvalho da Silva takes to the field in a B2 series match at the Campeonato Carioca wearing an electronic ankle bracelet. Video of the scene went viral on social media, drawing attention to the athlete’s story.

The player, who plays for Goitacaz, entered the field in the 25th minute of the match against Mackay, and the ankle brace did not go unnoticed by netizens. But what is the reason for using the device?

Watch the moment:

The player was arrested and is in open custody

Yuri was arrested in 2018 on drug trafficking charges and spent seven years in prison. He was released from prison in May and witnessed the developments of the system, and began serving his sentence in an open system. Although he was allowed to return to work, he had to wear an ankle bracelet to continue being monitored by authorities.

Yuri played the entire competition with the device and was present at many of the team’s matches. In a memo to GE, the Rio de Janeiro State Football Federation (FIRG) stated that there is no regulation prohibiting players from wearing an electronic ankle bracelet.

“With the mission of going beyond the field, promoting the search for the formation of citizens before athletes, the Rio de Janeiro State Football Federation recognizes that inclusion/resocialization is the fundamental function of sport. Regarding the participation of an athlete using an electronic ankle bracelet, and justice monitoring equipment, the FERJ will request information on whether there is a legal ban on professional activity so as not to make an error of judgment in this case,” the federation said in a note.
