The Argentine judicial system ordered the extradition of five Bolsonaro supporters who were convicted in Brazil of attempting a coup against Lula da Silva in 2023, and who fled and took refuge in Argentina.

The decision was made by a federal judge Daniel Ravicasfollowing the extradition trial of people convicted by the Supreme Court of Justice of Brazil and who were detained when they sought to hide in Argentina.

The decision was reached by Judge Ravikas Joelton Gusmão de Olvera, Joel Borges Correa, Rodrigo de Freitas Moro, Wellington Firmino and Ana Paula de Souza.

The detainees were sentenced to prison terms ranging from 13 to 17 years.

All of them began the asylum process in Argentina at the time, which was not resolved. This does not prevent the judicial process from continuing until it is completed.

The issue has political dimensions, as the extradition of criminals is a decision of the judiciary, but granting them political refugee status is a decision of the government, which prevents their extradition.

Security forces arrested five of Bolsonaro’s 61 supporters on an arrest warrant.

The Brazilian court considered that Bolsonaro heads a “criminal organization” and that the former president promoted the movements even in the barracks, in addition to an attempt to attack the palaces of the three powers in Brasilia.
