Bolsonaro, with a closed prison system

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who a week ago began serving a 27-year-and-three-month prison sentence for plotting a coup, will have to remain in prison in a closed system for at least seven and a half years, according to calculations released by the Brazilian justice system. According to a document sent by the Brasilia Criminal Court to the Supreme Court, the far-right leader will only have the right to request the benefit of the semi-open prison system on April 24, 2033. If this benefit is granted, Bolsonaro, who was then 78 years old, will be able to leave the prison during the day to work or study, but he will have to return to his place of confinement to sleep. The same court estimates that the army reserve captain will have the right to request conditional release, which would allow him to leave prison, but with restrictions and guarantees, on March 13, 2037, a few days before he turns 82 years old.

According to the document, Bolsonaro officially began serving his sentence on August 4, when the Supreme Court ordered him to be placed in his home for violating the restrictions imposed on him. The sentence is scheduled to be completed in 2052. The former president’s defense asked the court to cancel the entire process.
