Salvador City Council issued an epidemic alert on Wednesday (12/3), after a puppy was diagnosed with rabies in Bahia’s capital. The last recording of the disease in a dog or cat in the city was 20 years ago.
The animal diagnosed was three months old and grew up in a residence in the Sossuarana neighborhood in El Salvador. The puppy died on November 20 and testing confirmed the presence of canine rabies virus.
People who lived with the animal are monitored. The rabies virus is almost 100% fatal in humans and can be transmitted through contact with the saliva of infected animals.
According to an alert from the Municipal Health Department of Salvador, the puppy may have become infected as a result of exposure to wild animals.

After the case, the city of El Salvador took several preventive measures in the area where the animal was found, such as vaccinating dogs and cats in the surrounding area and providing instructions to residents.
According to the Regional Veterinary Council of Bahia (CRMV-BA), two more cases of rabies in horses were recorded in 2025 alone.
These records occurred in the Musoronga neighborhood of El Salvador in January and November of this year, and were confirmed through laboratory tests. Other suspected cases occurred in the same area, but the animal owners disposed of the remains without informing the health authorities for proper investigation.
CRMV-BA advises that if any incident occurs, such as bites, scratches or even contact with suspected animal saliva, people should seek medical care immediately for evaluation and rabies prevention.
