For the first time, between 13 and 20 December, 15 restaurants from Rocinha, Vidigal and PPG (Pavão-Pavãozinho and Cantagalo) will compete for the title of best drinks, snacks and main courses in the newly created Circuito Favela Gourmet. Five homes from each community participate in the competition with affordable prices: snacks ranging from R$15 to R$35 and dishes priced from R$35 to R$50.
The proposal is to use the power of the table to promote community tourism and highlight the creative economy of slums. As Renan Monteiro, CEO of Na Favela Turismo, says: “Gastronomy is the gateway: the tourist arrives for the taste, learns about the chef’s story and leaves with an understanding of the region, the people and the power that has always been there.”
According to the organizers, the Favela Gourmet Circuit was born as a cultural and regional tourism project, focusing on local talent to open paths, generate opportunities, and put favelas back on the city map. In the end, the resident wins, the tourist wins – and Rio wins, because she discovers new flavors where there has always been creativity.
