Millionaire Valencia idol campaigns for cancer treatment

A star player for clubs such as Atletico Madrid and Valencia, Lobo Penev is battling advanced kidney cancer. The 59-year-old Bulgarian needs to raise about 300 thousand euros (1.8 million Brazilian reals) to cover the costs of treatment.

Fernando Giner, president of the Valencia Players Association, is coordinating a fundraising campaign with representatives from Atletico Madrid, Celta and Compostela, Benev’s former clubs.

“The situation is complicated and we are doing everything we can to help. Benev was a comrade and friend, and we have to step in to do what we can. We are very worried. We know that The family’s economic situation does not allow paying 300,000 eurosJenner told Spanish newspaper AS.

Benev played for Valencia between 1989 and 1995. During that period, he scored 67 goals in 167 matches. He was part of Bulgaria’s 1994 World Cup qualifying campaign. However, he did not play in the tournament due to his treatment for testicular cancer.
