On Thursday (4/12), the Institute’s Joint Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry refused to summon the Attorney General of the Federation and nominee for the Federal Supreme Court, Jorge Mesías, in a victory for Lula’s government. There were 19 votes to 11.
The possible recall of Mesías could hamper the search for votes in the Senate to approve him as STF minister. The AU is facing resistance within the Senate due to the preference of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Davy Alclumbre (Uniao Brasil-AP), and other senators, who wanted to nominate Senator Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG).
As for the opposition, the Prosecutor General’s Office received complaints about abuse that occurred at the National Security Institute during his tenure as Union Prosecutor, and remained silent. Government officials claimed that the call would be opportunistic at this time.
