A regatta advertisement has been posted

The publication of the regatta announcement officially makes the countdown to the 2026 edition of the mega regatta in Mallorca and the start of the Sailing Grand Slam, the circuit formed by the world’s major Olympic regattas on the way to Los Angeles 2028. The 55th Princesa Sofia Mallorca Trophy organized by Fergus Hotels will be the first edition to be held under the umbrella of the organization that brings together the three organizing clubs and the Balearic Sailing Federation.

The 55th Fergus Hotels Princesa Sofia Mallorca Cup will be held in Palma Bay from 27 March to 4 April 2026. As the first major event of the season bringing together the ten sailing disciplines that will compete for Olympic glory at Los Angeles 2028, it is open to the women’s classes ILCA 6, 49er FX, iQFoil and Formula Kite; Men’s ILCA 7, 49er, iQFoil and Formula Kite; Mixed 470 and Nakra 17.

For the first time since its creation in 1968, the event will be organized by the foundation created by the Real Club Náutico de Palma (RCNP), the Club Náutic Arenal (CNA), the Club Marítimo San Antonio de la Playa (CMSAP) and the Balearic Sailing Federation (FBV). Katie Darder, President of the FBV, explains the importance of this new chapter: “The Foundation will contribute to further improving the quality of Sofia and promoting sport in Palma Bay with the highest standards of quality and environmental responsibility. The 2026 edition will be the first organized by this new organization to which the Federation and the three clubs belong, and we are all looking forward to it with renewed energy and a desire to continue enhancing the excellent reputation of Sofia, the Bay of Palma and Mallorca.

The start of the 2026 Grand Slam Sailing Championship

The 55th edition of Sofia will open the 2026 calendar of the Sailing Grand Prix (SGS), the circuit that unites the world’s most prestigious Olympic events (along with Semaine Olympique Française, Dutch Water Week, Kieler Woche, Long Beach & Los Angeles OCR). Following the dynamic initiated in the 2025 pilot season to standardize documentation of SGS-listed events, the regatta announcement published today will be shared across the circuit’s regattas, reducing bureaucracy, streamlining registrations and improving the participant experience.

Ferran Muniesa, Technical Director of Sofia, explains: “SGS is a great example of the importance of teamwork; An ambitious initiative that has received an excellent reception from the marine community and will continue to grow in the coming year. We are working with the classes to adapt the new Olympic format to large regattas with the aim of familiarizing participants with the changes proposed by the IOC for the Los Angeles 2028 Games. As the first major event of the year, Sofia will serve as a proving ground to test the operation of these new formats, which for us represents a great responsibility that we face with great enthusiasm.
