For many centuries, researchers have tried to explain the real reasons behind the construction of the Great Wall of China, and until now, its military function has been primarily taken into account. According to this logic, it is just a huge barrier to prevent invasions. However, a recent study by the University of Cambridge indicated that its structure was also used to protect areas, with the aim of protecting the core activities of these communities.

With the arrival of new archaeological techniques, researchers have uncovered unknown aspects of one of the Seven Wonders of the World, much to their surprise. This research focuses on a 737-kilometre-long medieval wall, located in northern China and northeastern Mongolia, revealing the presence of auxiliary structures that may have been linked to livestock farming.
“It is believed that the long walls of China and the Eurasian steppes served as defensive structures against aggressive nomadic tribes, or as elements to control the movement of local nomadic groups after imperial expansion,” the scholars said.
Although the Great Wall’s main purpose has always been thought to be to protect the empire, this new study suggests that it may have also been used for other activities.
Although its image has always been associated with a military fortress, this new data reveals that it would also have been used to regulate grazing and livestock, essential functions in the region.
Scientists were surprised by the results of the research and have no doubt that they will be able to make new discoveries.
It is worth noting that the Great Wall of China is one of the most visited places in the world because of its majestic structure, as many tourists choose it during their vacations, especially in the spring or fall in the Asian country.
