The House of Representatives will finally vote on Thursday on the People’s Party’s initiative to delete the date of the final moratorium on the exploitation of the Almaraz (Cáceres), Asco 1 (Tarragona) and Cofrentes (Valencia) nuclear power plants. The position of Junts, who a week ago announced his separation from the government in Congress, is crucial for the measure to move forward. Executive sources said that the amendment introduced in the Senate last week to the Sustainable Mobility Act was not objected to by the government because it does not affect budgets.
The government decided to stop two other initiatives approved by the people to finance the network of electric charging stations (charging stations) and to compensate companies because the new standard requires sustainability plans, as confirmed by parliamentary sources. Therefore, both initiatives will be canceled and will not be voted on on Thursday.
The House received Senate amendments to the Department of Transportation Act Tuesday afternoon, almost at the deadline to enter public session this week. A basic text for the executive authority, which remained in the middle of the previous legislative session, and on whose approval the disbursement of 10 thousand million euros of European funds depended.
Although parties such as the ERC have not yet determined the meaning of their vote, last week in the Senate (along with EH Bildu and PNV) they supported the Socialist Workers’ Party’s motion calling for the cancellation of that initiative on the nuclear calendar and a return to the original articles. Gontz abstained from voting and has not revealed at the moment what he will do in the plenary session.
The amendment conflicts with the government agreement between PSOE and SUMAR. The minority partner has been particularly reluctant to give in to the energy companies’ claims. Iberdrola, Endesa and Naturgy have asked the Executive to extend the useful life of the Cáceres plant until June 2030, thus extending the current separation dates: the first reactor in 2027 and the second in 2028.
In an interview on Sunday with El Pais newspaper, the Prime Minister opened a study of the proposal of these companies. He said: “If the owners of nuclear power plants guarantee the security of the regions and the energy supply, and do not ask us Spaniards to pay more taxes so that they can make money, we are ready to study the alternative they have. But they have to comply with these three demands which, in my opinion, are pure common sense.” Secretary General of the Extremadurian Socialists and candidate for the December 21 elections, Miguel Ángel Gallardo, was certain on Monday that the useful life of the Merz would be extended because there was a “commitment from the government” to do so.
“I would like to warn the president to be careful because not everything in the COP is TikTok (…) I recommend that he stop making calculations in Extremadura and make calculations in La Moncloa,” Somar’s deputy spokesman, Alberto Ibáñez, criticized on Tuesday. Far from being angry, Yolanda Diaz’s group does not have much room to maneuver, because the text as a whole will not be put to a vote on Thursday either, because it is not a basic law. Whether or not the amendments sent by the Senate will be approved will only be decided.
