House cleaning hacks proliferate relentlessly on the internet, especially those that focus on the kitchen. The latest thing to become popular is putting wine corks in the refrigerator. But for what purpose? To eliminate unpleasant odors, according to its advocates.
If our refrigerator emits a certain unpleasant smell, which may come from spoiled foods (in which case it is better to throw them away) or from products with a strong smell, we should leave the wine cork on one of the shelves.
It is assumed that the cover will absorb unpleasant odors, although if it is plasticized the effect may be nullified. So what do we do? Some publications recommend cutting it in half and soaking it in essential oils through the hole left by the opener.
You can use your favorite essential oil: peppermint, lemon, orange, lavender, eucalyptus, bergamot, rosemary… and its delicious scent should remain in your refrigerator.
This trick is more hygienic and practical than using toilet paper. Who suggests placing the roll on refrigerator shelves for the same purpose. In addition, cork takes up less space and is more difficult to take on an unpleasant appearance or become a nest of bacteria (although it is also advisable to change it).
Another trick is to place lemon halves with cloves inserted in the pulp, coffee or charcoal on the shelves. But to keep your freezer from smelling bad, the best trick is the most obvious: clean it regularly.
Experts recommend disinfecting it well at least once every two months. Food technologist Luis Riera explains that just because it appears clean does not mean it is, because “food contains microorganisms that we do not see, which accumulate, cause odors, contaminate other products and can lead to poisoning.”
Knowing what foods we have stored and when they expire is another key to not only preventing them from stinking bad, but also reducing food waste in the home.
